June 23, 2010

So we're in the middle of a massive forest fire in central Manitoba. As I write this, 10,000 hectares are burning hard & fast. They've just evacuated Cranberry Portage, which is about 50 minutes from my house. Firebombers are going strong, and we've borrowed fire crews from Ontario.

The smoke is billowing into our town. It was so bad at lunchtime today, it looked like pea soup fog out there, my neighbors house was hazy and you could barely see a block away. The wind once again shifted and the sky cleared. My lungs are hurting as I imagine all asthmatics are, even with the medicine. I really pray they get this under control asap.

I took this photo this morning at 8am when normally, the sun is so bright it's blinding. There was a bit of a haze, but nothing major, though enough to give it that weird eerie look.
